During the month of October the Family and Consumer Science Departments at local schools are
participating in a Cookies4Canines project. Students are making dog biscuits to" treat" local
animal shelters. Classes will be reading about animal safety, writing about what makes a good
pet owner, using math to manipulate recipes and calculate price to prepare this lab. Students
learn about the value of networking and giving back to the community. This unit satisfies the
following areas of our curriculum: Community Connections, Consumerism, Financial
Management, Personal and Environmental Management, Safety, and Common Core ELA as well
as Math. The following New York schools are participating: Little Falls CSD, Mt. Markham
CSD, Herkimer CSD, Frankfort-Schuyler CSD, Ft. Plain CSD, Phoenix CSD,
Richmondville-Cobleskill CSD, West Canada Valley CSD, Rome CSD, and the Regional
Learning Academy. The project is being coordinated by Peggy Zurn (Mt. Markham Middle
School).

Mount Markham is taking this project one step further to support Herkimer Humane Society.
teachers at the HS are competing to see which department can raise the most donations. National
Jr, Honor Society is collecting donations for “Paws4 Shelter Pets” and the Middle School is
collecting old blankets, towels, dog/cat toys, hand soap, detergent, thank you cards, and stamps.
Students at the middle school are also sewing collar bandanas for “Adopt a Shelter Pet” month
and Miss Zurn is using an embroidery machine to put saying like “Pick Me”, “Take Me Home”
and “I’d fit in your Treat Bag!”
